Kill Jackie and the midlife reinvention fantasy: why is hers glamorous and ours a new duvet?

Kill Jackie offers Catherine Zeta-Jones as an art dealer whose dangerous old life catches up with her. The general fantasy of being a woman with resources, nerve and a spectacular second act is very appealing. The assassins can keep their distance. Television reinvention involves a new identity and expensive surroundings. Ordinary reinvention involves saying ‘I am prioritising myself’ and buying the slightly better duvet. What harmless part of the glamorous thriller life would you steal? The wardrobe, the art, the confidence, or simply the ability to leave a room without going back for your bag?

The art budget. I would like one picture I bought because I loved it, rather than because it concealed an unfortunate wall plug.
Leaving a room once. Imagine. No return journey for your keys, then another for the bag containing the keys.
Confidence. I would like to send a two-word email without adding three apologies and a weather report.
A kitchen where the smoke alarm has never offered an opinion on dinner. That is the luxury I understand.
Keep the duvet. A comfortable night and a life with no assassins is a stronger package than people admit.

You’ve definitely got an opinion.
