Who looks after your information?

What we use, and why
| Information | Purpose and lawful basis |
|---|---|
| Email, handle, display name, optional bio, securely hashed password (if set) and account status; acceptance of our terms and 18+ declaration | Provide membership, secure sign-in and manage your account: necessary for our agreement with you. |
| Threads, replies, reactions, saved and followed conversations, conversation reading progress, followed members, votes and in-app alerts | Deliver the community features you request: necessary for our agreement with you. |
| Reports, appeals, moderation records and technical security information, including network addresses and short-lived hashed rate-limit identifiers | Our legitimate interests in preventing abuse, keeping the community safe and resolving disputes; legal obligation where a particular law requires action. |
| Contact details, message, page link, reference and correspondence | Our legitimate interests in answering enquiries and handling complaints; legal obligation when handling statutory data rights. |
| Browser push subscription address and notification preferences | Optional push alerts, with your consent. You can turn them off at any time. |
We receive most information from you. Other members may mention you, reply to you or submit a report involving you. Hosting and email services also process the technical information needed to deliver the service. We don’t ask for your real name to join. An email address and handle are necessary for membership; a bio and support-form name are optional.
What other people can see
Your handle, display name, bio and published contributions are public and may be indexed, copied or shared by others. A pseudonym does not guarantee anonymity. Your email address, saved items, following list, individual poll choice, push subscription and private support messages are not displayed publicly. Reaction and poll totals are visible.
Please avoid publishing identifiable information about other people or sensitive details about health, sex life, religion or similar matters. If you deliberately make your own sensitive information public, we may process that publication on the basis that you have manifestly made it public, alongside the relevant lawful basis above. That does not cover private information about someone else. Contact us to remove or review sensitive content; please do not put unnecessary sensitive material in a support message.
Who handles information
Authorised community administrators can access information needed to run and moderate Slagsnet. Hosting, database, security, backup and email providers process relevant data to deliver the service. If you enable push, your browser’s push provider—such as Apple, Google, Mozilla or Microsoft—handles delivery. Our push messages contain no conversation text or account details; the browser displays a generic alert.
We do not sell personal information. When configured, Google Analytics processes browser and page-use information to help us understand and improve the site. You can object using the analytics switch on Cookies & choices. Ad embeds are supplied by their providers and may process technical request information. We may disclose information where required by law, to respond to a valid legal request, or where necessary and proportionate to protect someone from harm. We consider the legal basis and any additional protections needed for sensitive information before doing so.
International processing
Hosting, email and browser push services may process information outside the UK. Contact Slagsnet for the current processing locations and information about applicable transfer arrangements. The provider and safeguard details are part of our public-launch review.
How long it stays
- Account details and community activity are kept while needed to provide the account and maintain the conversations you join. You can request account closure, erasure or anonymisation through Slag Hub.
- Sign-in and password reset links expire after 15 minutes; sessions expire after 30 days. Changing your password ends other sessions and invalidates outstanding links. Expired sign-in, session and rate-limit records are removed by scheduled daily cleanup.
- Support submissions remain while a case is open. Resolved submissions are deleted from the site’s support inbox after 12 months. Correspondence should follow the same schedule, unless a specific dispute or legal requirement justifies longer retention.
- Moderation evidence is kept for as long as needed to investigate the issue, handle an appeal and prevent repeated abuse. The nature and seriousness of the issue, relevant legal requirements and whether a dispute remains open determine that period.
- Push subscription addresses are removed when you disable them, when the push service reports they have expired, or after 180 days without a subscription update or successful delivery. Queued push jobs expire after one day.
Deletion requests are assessed individually: some records may need to be retained for legal duties or disputes, and other people’s contributions are separate. We will explain any exception. Copies already made by other users are outside our direct control. Backup and infrastructure-log retention must also be considered when completing a request.
Your rights
Depending on the information and circumstances, you can ask for access, correction, erasure, restriction or a portable copy. You can withdraw push consent in notification settings without affecting earlier lawful processing. We may need proportionate information to verify that a request is yours; please don’t send identity documents unless asked.
Your right to object
You can object to processing based on our legitimate interests, explaining your particular situation. Choose “Privacy or data request” in the Slag Hub form. We will consider your request and explain our decision.
We normally respond to data-rights requests within one month, subject to lawful extensions and identity checks. There is normally no fee. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office, telephone 0303 123 1113, or write to Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire SK9 5AF.
Cookies, children and updates
See Cookies & choices for device storage. Membership is intended for people aged 18 or over. If you believe a child is using an account or their personal information has been posted, please contact Slagsnet through Slag Hub. Our moderation decisions are made by people; security rate limits and feed sorting are automated, but we do not use solely automated decisions with legal or similarly significant effects.
We update this notice when our practices change and will highlight material changes through the service.
