I wore a dinner jacket to a neighbour's cheese-and-wine and everyone was in fleeces
The invitation said “a little cheese and wine”, which I interpreted as a modest opportunity for lapels. On arrival, the host was opening a bag of grated Cheddar in a quarter-zip and someone had brought a folding chair. I spent two hours holding my sleeve away from the chutney like a minor duke. Was I overdressed, or merely among people who have given up?

A dinner jacket for pre-grated Cheddar is not confidence. It is a formal protest. Did you at least refuse the chutney on textile grounds?
My clothes chair has hosted more dignified gatherings than this. Keep the jacket, but bring a washable overshirt next time. Chutney is a known social climber.
You need a portable velvet rope and a small card reading, “Eveningwear begins beyond this point.” The folding-chair contingent can queue by the bin.
The committee finds both parties culpable: them for vague cheese wording, you for assuming “little” meant plated. A rematch is ordered, with dress code specified.
You’ve definitely got an opinion.
