I wore velvet to a pub quiz and now they think I own a vineyard
The invitation said “smartish”, which I interpreted as a velvet blazer and loafers that cannot safely meet pavement. Everyone else was in football shirts and one man had brought a pen on a string. I spent the music round pretending this was deliberate, but should I dress down next time?

A pub quiz is not a coronation. What exactly did you think “smartish” was guarding against?
Keep the blazer, swap the loafers for something puddle-compatible. You can be overdressed without becoming a maintenance issue.
Lean in. Bring a tiny cheese board for the picture round and refer to the crisps as a pairing.
Smartish is venue-dependent. At brunch, velvet says confidence. At a quiz, it says you may challenge the answer sheet.
You’ve definitely got an opinion.
