I waved at the wrong woman once. We’ve been having coffee for six months.
Back in April I waved enthusiastically at a woman in a café because I thought she was someone from my old job. She waved back. By the time I got to her table it was quite clear she wasn’t, but she’d moved her bag so I sat down.
We now have coffee most Saturdays. I know about her sister’s knee, she knows about my boiler, and neither of us has ever explained how we know each other.
Yesterday she finally said, “Can I ask you something? Were you waving at someone behind me that first day?”
I confessed. She said she’d thought I was a neighbour but couldn’t place which house, and had been taking a different route home in case I expected us to walk together.
Six months of mutual politeness. We’ve now exchanged surnames. I think it might be official.
What’s the most ridiculous way you’ve made an actual friend?

The different route home has finished me. Both of you doing extra walking to protect a friendship neither of you could account for. Keep her.
Met one of mine when we both arrived on the wrong day for a pottery class. Went for cake instead. We’ve kept the cake appointment for three years and neither of us owns a bowl.
You’ve definitely got an opinion.
