My friend cancelled brunch and I had already put the good napkins out

She cancelled two hours before because her boiler was being looked at, which is apparently more urgent than seeing my new butter dish. I have now eaten three croissants alone at the table, with the napkins folded like minor aristocracy. Do I pack everything away or maintain the brunch until someone worthy appears?

A cancelled brunch is not permission to demote the napkins. What sort of standards would that be?

Text another friend, offer coffee and pastries, and quietly omit that they are a substitute.
Keep it laid for a fortnight. Call it an installation about modern abandonment.
Honestly, enjoy the croissants. The butter dish has seen you now, but it needn’t define you.

You’ve definitely got an opinion.
